What Customer.io Costs, in Short
As of October 8, 2026, Customer.io sells three plans: Essentials, Premium, and Enterprise. Essentials “starts at $100 per month,” billed monthly, and covers 5,000 profiles and 1 million emails a month on two workspaces. Premium “starts at $1,000 per month,” billed yearly, and Enterprise is quote-only. Essentials has published prices up to 50,000 profiles; Premium and Enterprise profile volumes are custom. The billing unit is the profile (a person or an object), not the email, so your bill follows the size of your user base more than your send volume.
How Customer.io’s Pricing Model Works: Profiles, Not Emails
Customer.io’s pricing page says: “We charge you based on your account’s maximum number of uniquely identified people and objects (profiles).” Objects are non-person records such as companies or accounts, and people and objects share one limit. Per Customer.io’s billing docs, “People and objects count together toward your plan’s profile limit.”
The rules that decide your count:
- High-water mark. “If a profile exists at any point during the billing period, it counts towards your bill for that month.”
- Deleting profiles helps later, not now. Per the docs on deleting inactive people, “Your current billing cycle counts the profile you removed, but future billing cycles will not.”
- Re-adding costs twice. “If you delete a profile and add it back in the same billing period, it counts as two profiles for billing.”
- Workspaces add up. “If the same profile exists in multiple workspaces, it counts as multiple profiles for billing.” Test and staging workspaces count too, because the billing pages count profiles “across ALL workspaces.”
- Anonymous profiles. The pricing page and billing docs do not say how anonymous visitors are counted. Treat that as unpublished and check the Account Summary in your workspace, which separates current and billable profiles.
Emails are a secondary meter. Essentials includes 1 million emails a month, and extra volume is “Additional 1,000 emails | $0.12” on every plan. The billing docs add that “Any email that reaches your email service provider (ESP) counts towards billing,” even if it later bounces or is suppressed.

Essentials publishes this profile ladder: 5k at $100, 10k at $145, 20k at $235, 30k at $325, 40k at $415, and 50k+ at $505+. Beyond what the plan includes, “Additional profiles are $0.009 each, billed as overages.” The docs list a lower overage rate of $0.004 per profile for Premium and Enterprise. Annual pricing for Essentials is not published; the page lists Essentials as billed monthly. Figures in this table come from customer.io/pricing on the date above.
Separate Products and Add-Ons
Customer.io does not sell data pipelines as a separately priced product on the pricing page. Reverse ETL is listed as available on all three plans, while data warehouse destinations and data replay require Premium or Enterprise.
What is priced or gated separately:
- Extra emails: $0.12 per additional 1,000, all plans.
- SMS: “Monthly SMS sends | Custom” on every plan. Push and in-app are listed as unlimited.
- HIPAA: custom, and marked with an asterisk that the page defines as “additional cost.”
- Startup Program: “Early-stage companies get a full year free through our Startup Program” for companies that have raised under $10M.
- Dedicated IP: not listed on the pricing page. The page mentions dedicated hardware for Enterprise, which is a different thing, so ask sales if a dedicated IP matters to you.
Where Customer.io Costs Escalate
Profiles grow faster than sends. Most SaaS products keep adding signups, trial accounts and objects long after email volume flattens. Because the meter is profiles, a product that sends the same lifecycle emails to twice as many records pays for twice the audience. Cutting your send frequency does little; trimming stale profiles does, but only from the next billing cycle.
Feature needs force Premium before profile count does. Essentials has published prices up to 50,000+ profiles, so volume alone does not push you off it. Needing anonymous messaging, more than 2 object types, more than 2 workspaces, managed deliverability, warehouse destinations or chat support does. Premium then starts at $1,000/month on a yearly commitment, versus $100/month billed monthly on Essentials.
Hidden multipliers. Duplicate profiles across workspaces, deleted-and-re-added users within one cycle, and bounced emails all count. If your team uses separate dev and production workspaces, load test data deliberately.
Customer.io bills on the highest number of uniquely identified people and objects in a billing period, across all workspaces. Deleting a profile lowers next month’s count, not this month’s, and re-adding it in the same period counts it twice.
Worked Cost Example: 4,000 Profiles Growing to 12,000
Take a SaaS product with 4,000 identified users and a signup-driven lifecycle program (onboarding, activation nudges, billing notices), sending well under 1 million emails a month.
- Month 1, 4,000 profiles: inside the 5k tier, so $100/month.
- At 10,000 profiles: the published tier price is $145/month.
- At 12,000 profiles: this sits between the 10k tier ($145) and the 20k tier ($235). If the extra 2,000 are billed as overages at $0.009 each, that is $18 on top of $145, or $163/month. If your account moves to the 20k tier, it is $235/month. The pricing page does not say which rule applies at which boundary, so confirm with Customer.io before you budget.
- Email volume stays inside the 1 million included, so it adds nothing.
Tripling the user base moved the bill from $100 to somewhere between $163 and $235 a month, with no change in email volume. Add a feature that needs Premium (anonymous messaging, for example) and the floor becomes $1,000/month, with the profile price custom.
How Customer.io’s Billing Model Compares
Most developer-focused email tools bill on volume, which makes cost grow with sending. Customer.io bills on audience size, and lifecycle tools often do the same. Which is cheaper depends on whether you have many users who get few emails (profile billing hurts) or few users who get many emails (volume billing hurts). Prices below were re-checked on each vendor’s page on October 8, 2026.
| Tool | Billing unit | Entry price |
|---|---|---|
| Customer.io Essentials | Profiles (people and objects) | $100/mo for 5,000 profiles |
| Resend (transactional) | Emails sent | Free for 3,000 emails/mo; Pro $20/mo for 50,000 |
| Postmark | Emails sent | Free for 100 emails/mo; Basic $15/mo for 10,000 |
| MailerLite | Active subscribers | Free to 250 subscribers; Comfort from $12/mo |

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Customer.io cost per month?
Essentials starts at $100 per month for 5,000 profiles, billed monthly. Premium starts at $1,000 per month, billed yearly. Enterprise is custom. Checked on October 8, 2026 at customer.io/pricing.
Does Customer.io have a free plan or free trial?
The pricing page lists no free plan. It offers a “Start a trial” link without stating a trial length, and early-stage companies that raised under $10M can get a full year free through the Startup Program.
What counts as a profile in Customer.io?
People and objects both count, together, toward one plan limit. A profile counts if it exists at any point in the billing period, even if deleted later, and the same person in two workspaces counts twice.
Does Customer.io charge per email?
Not as the main meter. Essentials includes 1 million emails a month, and extra emails cost $0.12 per 1,000 on every plan. The plan price itself is set by profiles.
What happens if I go over my profile limit?
Per the billing docs, “If you go over your allotted number of profiles or emails, we charge you for the overages.” On Essentials that is $0.009 per extra profile; the docs list $0.004 for Premium and Enterprise.
Is Customer.io cheaper on an annual plan?
Customer.io does not publish an annual discount. Essentials is listed as billed monthly, while Premium is billed yearly, so the choice is tied to the plan, not a discount.
Does deleting profiles lower my Customer.io bill?
Yes, from the next billing cycle. The current cycle still counts the deleted profile, and re-adding it in the same period counts it twice.
